Black Women Owned Businesses to Support

Black Women Owned Businesses to Support

The events of the past month, the past year, forever, are outrageously disgusting. Black people’s human rights have been discriminated and taken away from for forever. As a white women living in America and having this platform, although small, I recognize that I would be doing wrong and stepping onto the wrong side of history if I didn’t speak up.

I have been taking the time to further educate myself on topics that I now realize that I knew very little about for the past few days, and I’m going to be making it a habit of continuing to do so. There is injustice in this country for humans, and as a young white women I, and all other white people, and all other poc, have a responsibility to speak upon these issues and stand with the Black community always.

There are petitions to sign, numbers to text and call, places to donate if you are able, and additional resources at this link to support humans: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/

Remember to vote, and if you are not registered please do if you are eligible. Make sure to educate yourself on the candidates and ensure that who you are voting for is anti-racist and wants to make a true change in this country. This is a human rights issue we are facing.

One of my resolutions this year was to start shopping from smaller businesses. Whenever someone says that they’ve read a post of mine the happiness I feel is definitely one a small business owner is overcome with when they receive new customers. With Google and Instagram being at our fingertips we can discover new businesses everyday which is incredible. I love to come across a piece of clothing, accessory, or home decor item that is totally unique. Some of my favorite pieces are those I’ve purchased from smaller businesses that don’t receive as much publicity.

For today’s post I am sharing seven Black women owned businesses to support.

La Basketry

La Basketry first launched in 2017 by a sister duo Tabara and Mamy. It’s an online boutique that offers handmade woven baskets and other woven products handmade by female artisans in Ngaye Mkeke which happened to be right outside their parents hometown Thies in Senegal. Mamy has since stepped down, but Tabara over the years has learned how to weave baskets and offers workshops and has a book that teaches basket-making from 16 different projects. Read more about La Basketry’s story here.

Hand-woven Fan

This fan is so cute and Tabara offers them in an array of fun summer colors. I think it’s so chic to carry a fan in the summer as you’re out exploring or running errands, and it keeps you cool from the summer heat!

Gina

This pretty lilac color woven basket is so perfect to hold fruits and vegetables on your kitchen counter. I’d also use this to store my bracelets!

Melanie Marie Collection

Melanie Marie Collection is a New York City based contemporary, classy jewelry line. You can get customized name and initial necklaces, anklets, rings, bracelets, and earrings. Melanie also offers a selection of women’s and men’s apparel. Some of the pieces are hypoallergenic which I love!

Janel

I love chandelier earrings. The purple and pink color combination is so pretty on this pair.

Bamboo Letter Necklaces

A bamboo initial necklace is a pretty summer jewelry piece to have.

Tree Fairfax

Tree Fairfax creates minimal leather goods, handmade and they aren’t mass produced. She use leather hides with imperfections that are natural in each bag that makes the piece you order different and unique from the rest.

Cognac Woven Clutch

The cognac brown color of this woven clutch is so beautiful.

Lois Belt

Durable black, cognac, mahogany, and russet tan belt with brass hardware. The rich tones pair so well with any jeans, dresses, skirts, or shorts in your wardrobe.

Zou Xou

Zou Xou creates minimal, elegant shoes with just the right of detail that make for perfect shoes for your wardrobe. The shoes are all produced in low quantities to reduce waste and energy which is amazing. Created and founded in New York City in 2015, Katherine Theobalds is inspired by the artistry of Argentinian footwear design.

Eugenia Flat in Black Glaze

I’m a lover of the Mary Jane style of shoes, and these flats are so perfect for everyday wear. The square-toe is chic, and the top is made from kidskin leather and lambskin lining. Handmade in Argentina.

Lagos Sandal in Olive

These sandals are simple and in such a pretty olive color for summer. I tend to find sandals uncomfortable because my shoes always need to have special insoles, but these are lined with memory foam and are reinforced with extra lining at the heel. The square toe is as chic as it is comfortable because your toes aren’t being squished together.

THEBE MAGUGU

THEBE MAGUGU is a South African contemporary brand. Perfectly described on the website as “Sleek, forward-looking design intersects with motifs from our continent’s storied past, providing smart, multifaceted clothes as valuable as their woman.” The site is currently being redone, but you can email thebemagugu@thefashionagent.co.za for sale inquiries. Their Instagram is linked here.

Zebra Mud Set

This set screams a 70’s mood! The work that went into this is amazing and can be fully read here. The piece has an NFC chip in the label that when scanned with a smart phone provides you with information about the piece along with photographs and biographies on all the people who worked on it. How amazing!

Fluted Green and White Knitted Dress in Wool with Sisterhood Scarf

In the AW20 collection, this green colored dress is so beautiful. I love that it has a drop was it effect with a pleated bottom portion. Featured on the Instagram here.

VAVVOUNE

Valerie Blaise founded the brand and everything is made in New York City’s Garment District. VAVVOUNE sells leather accessories, and all of the designs are thought of in Brooklyn, New York. Beautiful green, purple, and red leather hues along with neutral tones are offered.

SUNSA BAG

I love a red bag, and I love an attachable strap so that I can wear the piece in different ways. So chic!

MISHE

A top handle bag that also has an attachable strap. Love the wisteria color with the gold hardware. This shape is also so unique!

Serendipitous Project

Sydney Ziems founded Serendipitous Project in 2017 to provide people with affordable yet sustainable trendy jewelry and accessories. All of the pieces from her permanent collection are handmade to order. There is also another aspect of the brand where she sells up-cycled vintage pieces!

Drip Earrings

One of the reasons I love when summer dressing comes around is because I love shell jewelry. These seashell earrings with dangling freshwater Keshi pearls are perfection.

Vintage Tapestry Handbag

From their vintage selection, a 1950’s handbag!

I look forward to sharing more Black owned businesses this week and in the future. I am committed to being a better ally.

If you want to share any more resources on how you’re making a change, how you’re furthering your education on this issue, more petitions to sign and numbers to text and call, please share in the comments below.

Vintage Vogue Photographs That are Inspiring my Summer Style

Vintage Vogue Photographs That are Inspiring my Summer Style

Nothing fills up my fashion appetite more than combing through vintage photographs from magazines. Vogue is home to many of my favorite photographers work, and the summer issues have inspiring shots. I’m always looking for inspiration with my wardrobe as the seasons start, and almost always it’s from vintage Vogue. Although this year our summer may be looking different, the inspiration doesn’t have to change.

Dressing for The New Normal

Dressing for The New Normal

There’s no denying that the effects of COVID-19 are going to, and already are, hitting the fashion industry hard. Not only have consumer’s buying habits changed due to the lockdown, once we all start going outside again I truly believe things are going to be different, and some things forever. While we may need to, or be recommended, to wear a mask and gloves for some time, I think there will be less consumption of fast fashion and “trend” buying. There’s lots to talk and think about regarding people’s buying habits after quarantine, but today I’m going to be discussing the topic of dressing for the new normal once we all start to head back into our “normal” lives.

When it hits mid-May although it isn’t summer for another month, it starts to feel like it. Classes are finishing up for those who are in school, and now summer is fully on my mind. We’re all not sure how this summer is going to turn out, whether we’ll be able to hit the beach or if we’ll be inside. But summer shoes are starting to show up on e-commerce sites, and I’m sharing my favorites below.

Pretty Frocks for The House(for now…)

Pretty Frocks for The House(for now…)

Although I here and there wear a pair of flared jeans or dress pants, I’ll always be a dress girl through and through. Nothing makes me feel more comfortable, and I love the feeling of throwing on a dress with flats and a pair of statement earrings. I feel put together, but still comfortable, which is so important. If you aren’t comfortable in the clothes you’re wearing, it shows.

Sparkles for Daywear

Sparkles for Daywear

It’s no surprise that I’m a long time fanatic of wearing sparkles in the day time. Life’s a party, so why not dress like it? I’m no stranger to wearing my “night life” clothing in the day. A sequin blouse and jeans, paired with a strappy heel during the day? Now that’s chic.

Fancy Yourself a Hat?

Hats are my most favored accessory. They not only hide a bad hair day, they elevate any look. A chic wool beret in the winter, or a vintage inspired straw hat in the summer, I can’t help myself in adding new ones to my collection every season.

Living in Linen

Living in Linen

Easy, breezy. If you’re looking for a fabric that’s comfortable and chic to wear for the summer months, you’ll be living in linen this season. Linen is a fabulous fabric for the hot and humid months, and there are so many different ways to wear it that you’ll never have to repeat the same outfit twice. Since we’re moving right along into the end of July and beginning of August where summer temperatures are at their highest, wearing light weight pieces is key to staying comfortable and being able to still enjoy the summer.

Wedding season is here, and finding something to wear can be difficult. When finding a dress to a wedding there are many things to consider, one being that you should absolutely not wear white, but how to find an affordable dress. Hat Attack- A Way to Make Your Summer Looks Chic

Hat Attack- A Way to Make Your Summer Looks Chic

I love myself a good hat, or fascinator if I’m feeling a bit extra. This past Spring I bought this satin rose colored Derby party hat for a fun accessory to add to my wardrobe. Don’t let the name fool you though, I most certainly just wore this hat on a day out exploring the city. I definitely want to add more “Derby style” hats to my accessories for this summer. Hats are such a fun way to experiment with different textures, colors, and styles.

The New Tory Burch Summer Collection is a Dream

When the new summer arrivals landed on the Tory Burch website this past week I immediately had to stop and go scrolling through. Whenever I see the new collections at Tory Burch it’s like a breath of fresh air. The pieces are always so clean looking, new and re-imagined, and there’s always something to love (if not multiple, or everything if you’re like me and obsessed with the Tory Burch aesthetic and lifestyle.)

Blue, a Color I’ve Been Loving

Blue, a Color I’ve Been Loving

When the summer months come around I always tend to gravitate towards blues. Not just in my wardrobe, but in my makeup lately as well. I tried out the L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Mascara in cobalt blue just last week and have been obsessed with it ever since. I rarely ever experiment with makeup, but I’ve been loving doing the blue mascara with an aqua eyeliner lately to add some fun to my makeup look.
