I will never forget the time I first came across Karl Lagerfeld and his work for Chanel. It completely changed my perspective on fashion, and inspired me so much to dream big and wear the things I love. I thank Karl Lagerfeld for having such a creative mind and sharing it with the fashion community. He’ll never be forgotten, and definitely left a mark on the fashion industry.
When I heard of his death on Tuesday morning I couldn’t believe it. Just recently I watched the Chanel Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2018 7 Days Out episode and kept thinking to myself- “Karl Lagerfeld really is a fashion genius. He never left go of Chanels roots no matter what else was “trending” in the industry, he kept making the Chanel tweed and classic looks new again.” Every one of the collections brought something new and eye pleasing, and I’ll miss him being the creative director of Chanel.
Karl had been the Creative Director of Chanel since 1983. He was famously known for many things, including his signature glasses, fingerless gloves, powdered ponytail, and black jeans. Lagerfeld knew how to take the roots of a company and transform it to make it more wearable for today, and was always listening to young people. He never went to fashion or art school, but entered a fashion competition called the “International Wool Secretariat” and won the coat category. It’s amazing to me that he never had a fashion education, he really was born with it.
He never stopped designing even towards the end, and actually had a contract with Chanel for life; oh if he was only immortal. Karl Lagerfeld could never be replaced, he was a true icon and gave so much to the fashion community. I’m so grateful to of come across him and his designs at Chanel, because it changed my life and has made me aspire for a career in fashion.
Thank you Karl Lagerfeld
